I returned to drawing after a 20 year gap when a person I knew made such enthusiastic comments for my pencil work that I selected the most ambitious subject and the largest sheet of paper I could find, to see if I could still do it. Nearing completion of Dayboats, whilst sitting and quietly working, a thought quietly, drifted through my mind asking ‘why would I want to do anything else?’ Fortunately, it was drifting slowly enough that I heard it.
My portfolio has continued to grow despite the time taken to concentrate on the 'invisible' parts of setting up any business and my gallery contains some of the pieces produced since September 2006.
I am challenging the misconception that pencil is not a medium for producing serious, ‘finished’ pieces and the dismissive attitude that it is only suitable for using as a step on the way to creating something else that somehow has a greater value. I believe pencil is a valuable and valid form of artistic expression and while exploring and developing the range beyond what is currently considered as possible within the medium, I am attempting to elevate it's status to an accepted form of finished works in their own right.
